WESTERN EDGE TAKES A WALK ON THE CLASSICS SIDE WITH TENNESSEE WILLIAMS' "THE GLASS MENAGERIE"
Usually a company that produces contemporary drama, Nanaimo’s Western Edge Theatre will once again take a rare walk on the classics side with its production of Tennessee Williams’ "The Glass Menagerie," opening February 10th at Nanaimo Centre Stage.
“This is a play that every new generation deserves to experience,” says artistic producer Frank Moher. “That’s one of the reasons we change things up occasionally and present these classics. And if you’re returning to ‘The Glass Menagerie’ after a long time away, you’ll be reminded again just how powerful and magical live theatre can be.”
Set in 1930s St. Louis, “The Glass Menagerie” features one of Tennessee Williams’ most unforgettable characters, the faded southern belle Amanda Wingfield. An early example of a “single mom” (though not by choice), Amanda regales her children with tales of the many gentlemen callers who used to court her in her youth, even as she tries to persuade son Tom to find a beau for his shy, hobbled sister, Laura. But like the set of crystal figurines that gives the play its title, Laura's world must be handled with care. When Tom finally accedes to his mother's wishes, and invites former high-school hero Jim home for dinner, the stage is set (literally) for a night that will change the Wingfields' lives forever.
Playing Amanda is popular Nanaimo actress Lorna McLellan. “Another reason we’re doing ‘The Glass Menagerie,’” says Moher, “is because I watched Lorna in a show I directed a few years ago and thought, ‘She’d be a terrific Amanda.’ I was right.”
Joining her are Jesse Cooper as Tom, Karrie Ennis as Laura, and Antonio Gradanti (of “Tuesdays with Morrie” fame) as Jim, the “gentleman caller.” Direction and set design is by Eliza Gardiner, with lighting design by Erik Tully.
“The Glass Menagerie” plays for five performances only on Feb. 10, 11, 17, and 18 at 7:30 pm, with a matinee on Feb. 19 at 2 pm. All performances are at Nanaimo Centre Stage, 25 Victoria Rd. Tickets cost $20 for Adults, $17 for Seniors, and $10 for Students, available online at westernedge.org, by phone at 250-668-0991 or 1-888-320-3343, or at Headliners (165 Fraser St., Nanaimo).
